Cat6 vs. Cat6a for Wisconsin Manufacturing: Which Cable Should You Pull?

Cat6 or Cat6a for your next plant expansion? A straight comparison covering bandwidth, distance, PoE++, EMI, and where the price difference actually pays back.

Every plant expansion or new build we cable in Wisconsin comes with the same question from the GC or the IT lead: "Just use Cat6, right?" Sometimes yes. Often no. Here's how we decide.

What Cat6 actually does

Cat6 supports 10GBASE-T, but only up to 55 meters (~180 ft). Beyond that you're back to 1 Gbps. For most office drops that's fine — patch panel to desk is rarely more than 100 ft.

Cat6 also handles PoE+ (30W) comfortably. It does not officially support PoE++ Type 4 (90W) over long runs without heat derating.

Where Cat6a earns its keep

Cat6a is rated for the full 100 m (328 ft) at 10 GbE, handles PoE++ Type 4 (90W) without thermal issues, and the shielded variants (F/UTP or S/FTP) cut EMI dramatically.

On a Wisconsin manufacturing floor, that last point matters. We've troubleshot enough flapping ports near VFDs, plasma cutters, and big motor banks to make shielded Cat6a our default on the production side — even when the IT team only needs gigabit today.

The PoE++ argument for outdoor cameras

If you're putting heated outdoor cameras on a Wisconsin facility (and you should — the heaters keep the dome clear of ice), the camera plus heater can pull 50–80W. That's PoE++ Type 3 or Type 4 territory.

A Cat6 run pulling 60W will warm noticeably inside a packed conduit. Cat6a's larger conductors and tighter twist handle the heat without degrading the signal.

The cost difference is smaller than people think

In 2026 pricing for a typical commercial install:

  • Cat6 plenum bulk cable: ~$0.32/ft
  • Cat6a plenum bulk cable: ~$0.55/ft

For a 200-drop Cat6 project averaging 150 ft per run, a typical install lands around $60K–$80K all-in (cable, jacks, patch panels, labor, and Level 3 certification testing). Cat6a runs higher — the cable upcharge alone adds roughly $7,000, plus more labor for the larger, stiffer cable.

When we still recommend Cat6

  • Pure office space with no plans for Wi-Fi 6E/7 in the next 5 years
  • VoIP-only drops in conference rooms and reception
  • Tight remodel budgets where the conduit and labor are already a stretch

What we install at Wisconsin manufacturing sites by default

For new plant builds and major expansions, we standardize on:

  • Cat6a shielded (F/UTP) for everything on the production floor
  • Cat6a UTP for the office side
  • OM4 multimode fiber for backbone runs between IDFs and the MDF

This gives the customer a 10–15 year cabling plant that won't need to be re-pulled when they swap to Wi-Fi 7 APs, add cameras, or put 10 GbE on the CNC controllers.
