IDF and MDF — What's the Difference and Why It Matters
MDF — Main Distribution Frame
The central hub of your building's network — typically in the main server room or IT room. Contains your core switching, firewall, internet handoff, and fiber terminations from the building backbone. The MDF feeds every IDF in the building.
IDF — Intermediate Distribution Frame
Floor or zone-level closets that aggregate horizontal cabling from the surrounding area. Each IDF connects back to the MDF via backbone cable (fiber or Cat6A) and houses the access-layer switches that connect end devices.
